Eagles Fall to CSCA in District Finals - Will Travel Next Week

In a game that was about as even as possible, Coral Springs Christian got enough done in the first inning to come out on top 4-0 in the District 14-3A Championship. The loss by CCA means the Eagles will travel to American Heritage Delray (2-1 winners in 11 innings) next Wednesday for the Regional Quarterfinals. Game time is 7:00 PM.

CSCA opened the game with back-to-back base hits. Eagles starter Austin Sovay then uncorked a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with no out. He struck out the leading hitter in the district but a passed ball to the next hitter allowed a run to score. Sovay then struck out the clean up hitter and was ahead 0-2 on the next batter, who eventually walked. The following hitter drove a two-run double to center to give CSCA a 3-0 lead.

Sovay was otherwise brilliant throwing 6.2 innings, his longest outing of the year. He struck out seven and kept the Eagles in the game the rest of the way. CCA had as many base runners as CSCA through six innings but could not come up with the big hit. In both the sixth and seventh innings, Calvary had the first two runners on base but could not score. A soft liner in the sixth off the bat of Abraham Alejandro appeared headed to center field for at least on RBI but was snagged on a diving catch by the Crusaders second baseman.

In the seventh with one out, Andrew Liberty was called out at first on a close play that would have loaded the bases. It was the first time this season that Calvary was shut out.
