CCA Swan Song A Familiar Tune

The first week of May for the past four CCA baseball seasons has included a trip to American Heritage Delray for a Regional Quarterfinal. For Coach Mucerino, that streak extends five years to include a visit  with Westminster. He was .500 heading into last week's game; a game that few expected this Eagles team to reach. When the dust settled, CCA came up on the short end of a 1-0 acore that was decided by the first batter of the game.

Amfernee Seymour drew an innocent base on balls to lead off the game, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a two out base hit through the middle of the infield. Few knew then that the game was over, especially the two pitchers, Austin Sovay for CCA and Dylan Silva for Heritage.

Sovay went 4.2 innings, allowed just two hits and struck out four. Behind him the Eagles played solid defense and were in the game all night. Sovay was told after the game by a scout that his fastball was clocked at 91 mph on two occasions; a tribute to Mucerino and his staff for bringing Sovay along with a plan and not abusing their ace during the season.

But Silva, a Florida State signee, took the 1-0 lead and made it stand up for seven innings. The lefty went the distance in 102 pitches striking out nine while allowing only five base runners. Andrew Liberty was on base three times for CCA and reached second twice but was stranded each time.

"It was a pitching duel and we couldn't put an inning together against their guy," said Mucerino. "My hat's off to him. That's why he's going to FSU next year. It was a great season and the kids really rose to the challenge after graduating so many seniors."
