Eagles Edge Hurricanes in Pre Season Finale

Once again, CCA jumped out to an early lead but this time had to hang on to defeat Northeast High 8-7 at Westminster Academy last night. A five-run first was not enough cushion for CCA and after two innings, the Hurricanes were within one run. Three walks, an error and hit batsman fueled the rally for Northeast in the second inning. Starter Luke Poirier was brilliant in the first, throwing 10 pitches (9 strikes) for a 1-2-3 inning but could not repeat that in the second.

However, with the game in the balance in the bottom of the sixth, Poirier smacked a double to deep right center to break a 7-7 tie. Andrew Liberty pitched the seventh for the save which gave the win to Stephen Barnett. Austin Sovay and Jonathan Benstadt had strong performances at the plate.

Youth was served Thursday night with freshmen Andrew Gottfried, Josh Lane and Benestadt in the starting lineup. Ryan Reilly was out after having wisdom teeth removed and Nick Kumar is nursing an ankle sprain which will keep him out about two weeks.

Look for the youngsters again next week as CCA opens the regular season against host Flanagan on Monday night at 7 PM.
