Eagle starter Austin Sovay was excellent for three innings. He gave up a solo home run in the second and an unearned run in the first but was not getting much support offensively. Flanagan starter Jose Mesa was mowing down the Eagles until Gottfried coaxed a walk in the third and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Ryan Reilly drove him in with the first CCA hit off Mesa, a sharp single up the middle. Reilly would later drive in the tying run with a safety squeeze bunt in the fifth inning that turned into a base hit when he avoided the tag.
Up 7-2, the Eagles looked to be in good shape with two out in the bottom of the sixth until Gottfried gave up a run and began to tire. Liberty came in with the bases loaded and got a fly ball to end the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Flanagan rallied putting the first two runners on. Liberty struck out the next two Falcons swinging and then walked the bases loaded. A fly ball to right that would have ended the game was dropped to cut the lead to 7-5. But Liberty struck out a pinch hitter to secure the win.
Next up, CCA hopes to deliver high school win #100 for Coach Mucerino against St. Thomas on Tuesday at Flanagan, Game time is 4 PM.
