One For The Ages

The phrase "coming off the carpet" is used in sports nomenclature to describe a comeback. Thursday, the Eagles came off "the fleece", if you will, as they did their best imitation of the Midianites in a 9-7 win against Cypress Bay. Playing without Taylor Gushue for the second day and with several players limping, The Lord showed what He can do for His faithful.

Down to their last strike in the top of the seventh, the Eagles proved why you never quit. With the score 7-3 in favor of Cypress Bay, Tyler Middlebrooks worked a seemingly meaningless base on balls. Seth Natal reached on an error and an inning was born. Ryan Reilly singled to load the basses. Anthony Avila doubled to deep center to cut the lead to 7-5. Chris Walkerow chopped a ball toward the first baseman and gave 110% down  the line, diving safely into first base while Reilly and Avila crossed home plate to tie the game.

With a guarantee of playing the bottom of the frame, CCA went looking for the win. Josh Viveros popped a pitch into left field where the high sky prevented the left fielder from finding the ball and it dropped for a base hit. Stephen Barnett singled through right side scoring Walkerow. The cut off throw went wildly to third allowing Viveros to trot home. CCA 9, Cypress Bay 7!

Walkerow finished the deal with a dominating 1-2-3 inning for his first save which also made Ryan Lowrey a winner for the second day in a row. After tossing a complete game on Wednesday, Lowrey threw 12 pitches in the sixth to get CCA out of a jam and picked up the win.

The Eagles bats came alive pounding out 13 hits; a good sign with the three key district games looming. CCA finished with a 2-2 record in the Sarasota Baseball Classic - good for 5th place in their bracket.

Only one game this week and a big one as Coral Springs Christian comes calling at CCA Tuesday afternoon. Game time is 4 PM.
