Eagles Nip Falcons Again In Season Opener

There were a lot of new faces on both sides of the field this year but once again Andrew Liberty was in the middle of a CCA victory over Flanagan High.. For the second year in a row, the Eagles went to Flanagan and came away a winner on opening night; this time it was a 4-3 come from behind victory.

Calvary jumped out 2-0 with Liberty and Stephen Barnett coming around to score on a single by Andrew Gottfried in the first inning. But with nobody out and Gottfired on second, thee Eagles were unable to tack on. Starter Liberty, who closed the win last year at Flanagan, escaped trouble in the first and left the bases loaded. But he was tagged for a run in the second after a popup was misplayed near the mound for what would have been the third out.

In the third, Flanagan tacked on two more to take a 3-2 lead. Liberty pitched through the fourth and was rewarded when his teammates scored two in the top of the fifth. Winn Allen hit a sac fly over the drawn in infield to drive in Connor Rowland with the tying run. Liberty continued the rally with a two-out double followed by a Stephen Barnett walk. Gottfried singled off the third baseman's glove and the ball went far enough away to allow Liberty to score the go-ahead tally.

From there, CCA pitchers Alec Berizzi and Chris Meyer retired the last nine Falcons in order to preserve the win. Next up is St. Thomas Aquinas, a team which took the air out of the balloon last year following the upset win over Flanagan. The Raiders are deep with seniors and are always a tough test, Game time is 4 PM at Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines.

First Look At The Spring Schedule

The CCA spring schedule went from pencil notes on a calendar to stamped with the seal of approval this week from Eagles Head Coach Gregg Mucerino. Parents and players should NOT be looking at the potential "off" week this season as there ain't none!

Once again the Eagles will do battle with several teams well above their FHSAA Classification and will compete in three very strong tournament fields.

Pre season begins the test with games against The Benjamin School and 8A powerhouse Park Vista at the HSBN Preseason Challenge. Both games to be played at American Heritage Delray. For the third year in a row, CCA has accepted an invitation to play in the Falcon Challenge at Flanagan High School to open the season. Once again, the host Falcons (8A) are the opponent on opening night with St. Thomas Aquinas waiting for game two. The final game will be against either Miami Pace, Douglas or Killian making the first five games a baptism by fire for the Eagles.

Later in the season, CCA will host the Second Annual 4Him Classic. Teams from Miami, Tampa, Washington, DC and Lake Worth will square off at Calvary the week of March 25-28. The following week, which is the Eagles spring break week, the team will jog up to Orlando for the Catholic Challenge at Bishop Moore High. Included in this field are three reigning State Champs (Pensacola Catholic, Marion Catholic of Illinois and Deltona Trinity). The host team, Bishop Moore lost to Pensacola in the state semi so this event is flush with talented teams as well.

Coming down the stretch, Coach Mucerino wanted to be battle tested for the playoffs. Upon returning from Orlando, two district games, a visit to Boca Raton High and the annual tilt with North Broward Prep accomplishes that wish. Twenty four regular season games, two pre seaon and hopefully five post season games loom for the 2013 Eagles.
